About the Role:
A renowned construction and project management firm in London is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Graduate Quantity Surveyor to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate with a passion for quantity surveying to gain hands-on experience in a supportive and dynamic work environment. As a Graduate Quantity Surveyor, you will assist senior surveyors in delivering cost-effective and efficient solutions for construction projects, gaining valuable exposure to a variety of projects within the built environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation and management of project budgets, ensuring cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support the preparation of tender documents, pricing, and contracts.
- Help with cost estimations, including labour, materials, and other expenses, and ensure that budgets are adhered to.
- Conduct site visits and inspections to assess the progress of work and ensure compliance with cost and quality standards.
- Prepare cost reports and financial statements for projects, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Assist in the evaluation and negotiation of subcontractor quotes and changes to contracts.
- Collaborate with project teams to provide cost advice and support throughout the design, procurement, and construction phases.
- Develop knowledge of contractual and procurement processes, as well as relevant construction law and industry standards.
- Assist in the identification of risks and help in developing strategies to mitigate cost overruns or delays.
- Participate in meetings with clients, contractors, and consultants to discuss project progress and cost-related matters.
- Contribute to the preparation of final accounts and settlement of contractual disputes.
Requirements
- A degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent).
- Strong interest in the built environment and the role of a Quantity Surveyor within construction projects.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, contractors, and colleagues.
- A strong understanding of construction processes and cost management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and familiarity with industry-standard software (e.g., CostX, BuildSoft) is advantageous.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
- A proactive, problem-solving attitude and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Desirable Skills:
- Previous internship or work experience in quantity surveying or construction is advantageous.
- Knowledge of contract administration, including NEC, JCT, and other common forms of construction contracts.
- Membership (or willingness to work towards) a professional body such as RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).
