Are you a Graduate Design Engineer with experience using either Hydrosym or Inventor? Are you looking to join a company which is growing rapidly but sustainably and specialises mainly within the Marine and Offshore sectors?

Well, my client are a dynamic company, who are looking for a Graduate Design Engineer to join the team. You will be part of a small but diverse team who are committed to high engineering standards and providing effective solutions to clients. This is an opportunity to be immediately involved in key projects and to contribute to long term company development. Projects will range in size and duration from 4 weeks to 6 months and will be predominately for customers in the North East of England though there may be opportunities to work on-sites around the UK and Europe from time to time.

The Design Engineer's duties will be to identify customer needs and relay these requirements into a working system design. The role will focus on providing bespoke design solutions and seeing them through from initial concepts to production and commissioning. The scope of the engineering builds will include hydraulic power units, consoles, piping and manifolds.

As part of this role there is an expectation that the design engineer will have presence in the workshop and on-site and may be involved in activities such as mechanical assembly and commissioning.

Job Description

  • The graduate engineer's duties are to design hydraulic systems, plan and deliver projects to meet customer needs, prepare all the required technical documents for customer approval, fabrication, assembly, installation, commissioning, create as build final documents for the documentation pack and issue the Operation & Maintenance Manual.
  • Engineering projects will be predominately for marine, Renewable, and offshore sectors and thus require a high level of attention to detail, responsiveness, and management of documentation.
  • The scope of the engineering builds may include hydraulic power units, control consoles, bespoke hydraulic systems, and manifolds.
  • The graduate engineer will be responsible for providing the technical information to the customer, suppliers, sub-contractors, on-site/workshop hydraulic technicians.
  • He/She will be maintaining constant communication with the customer and ensure that all commercial, technical, and financial targets are met.
  • As part of this role there is an expectation that the graduate engineer will have presence in the workshop and on-site and may be involved in activities such as mechanical assembly and commissioning.

Main Responsibilities

  • Review and clarify customer requirements
  • Ensure feasibility, Provide technical guidance to the customer, Prepare engineering drawings and hydraulic schematics, Prepare quotations for work scope variations.
  • Work out calculations
  • Select and size components, Optimize system performance and cost
  • Resolve problems and improve manufacturability and serviceability of products
  • Prepare technical specification for sub-contractors
  • Check delivered goods on projects
  • Prepare technical documents for work files
    • Work instructions & risk assessments
    • Drawings
    • Hydraulic schematics
    • Technical procedures and reports
  • Prepare the OMM Operation and Maintenance Manual
  • Review the project KPIs for debriefing


  • Excellent organisational and time management skills to handle multi-tasking
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical/control system
  • Able to make hydraulic calculations (Fluid Mechanics)
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods
  • Knowledge of computer assisted design (CAD) software (Inventor and Hydrosym)
  • Creative approach for generating new ideas
  • Bachelor, Degree or equivalent in mechanical / electrical engineering
  • Previous experience working in hydraulic engineering: (IDEALLY)
    • Hydraulic Design
    • Commissioning of hydraulic equipment
    • Rigid pipe and hose installation
    • Electrical controls
    • Flushing and pressure testing
  • Project management
  • Familiar with offshore and marine technologies and specifications


  • Minimum 2:1 degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Demonstrable knowledge of electro-mechanical system design
  • Excellent grasp of engineering and design principles
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods
  • Knowledge of design for manufacture
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Inventor preferable)
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Full driving licence


  • Previous experience in mechanical system design
  • Familiarity of hydraulic components and their function
  • Project management skills
